Overcoming the language barrier

Newcomers may have lower level language skills or even unfamiliar accents that can present challenges in the workplace. Language training services are a key element in overcoming this barrier.

Cultural Orientation

International employees may look to their employer for simple advice on things like how to purchase a new home or car. Some business practices may also be unfamiliar to them. Additional mentoring on local workplace practices will benefit the employees and help them feel more comfortable and welcome.

Racism and Discrimination

Employers may not realise that acts of workplace racism may be subtle or hidden. If left unchecked, this could ruin a company’s reputation both internally and externally. Employers should implement proper policies and procedures to convey messages of equality and acceptance of diversity. They should open the lines of communication so that employees know that they can speak to someone if they experience racism or discrimination.

Networks

Formal and informal business networks help employees connect with their community. Employers should encourage newcomers to attend events hosted by the local Chamber of Commerce and by community oriented groups and associations (churches, YMCA, etc). The local settlement agencies may be able to connect the employees with multicultural associations or individuals with similar backgrounds.

Immigration Status

Foreign workers and international students work under temporary resident visas but some would like to make this province their permanent home. Employers interested in helping their employees become permanent residents should direct them to the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program. Some workers may also choose to immigrate through Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Federal Immigration program.

Family Settlement

Finding work for a spouse, a school for children, friends to talk to and activities to engage in are all essential in keeping new employees and their families happy and in the province. Employers should inform and involve new employees in events and activities that allow them to meet people and feel a sense of belonging. The New Brunswick Multicultural Council provides links to contacts, information and activities.
